Leland on Scott S4 Rod Series
When does good get better? When the designers at
Scott Fly Rods started thinking and tinkering with their extremely
popular S3 fly rod to bring to you the next generation, the Scott S4
fly rod. It takes some serious bravado to tackle the redesign of fly
rod that is as good as the S3, but Jim Bartschi has it, and the result
is one fine casting and fun fishing fly rod. Keeping with tradition of
supplying a lightweight fast action fly rod with a quick loading tip,
Scott utilized a multi-directional lay-up and three different high
performance carbon fibers to increase the line speed delivery and
reduce the weight of the new S4 fly rod.
Trout fishing takes patience and timing.
Regardless of whether you’re gently dapping #20 tricos to nosing
rainbows or blasting streamers into undercuts for monster browns, it
takes a fly rod that gives you control. Line speed can sometimes mean
everything. The new, powerful Scott S4 Series are capable of generating
faster line speeds than ever before for the ultimate in control What
else do you want? How about fun? Welcome to the Scott S4 fly rod. No
one knows more about the enjoyment of the art of fly fishing than the
guys at Scott.
Continuing with the bravado theme,
the S4 has its bare natural graphite finish, which gives you an idea of
how this fly rod series is made. The idea, of course, is maximum weight
reduction. To bring you one of the lightest fly rod series made, Scott
utilizes REC Recoil nickel titanium snake guides and Fuji Concept
stripper guides with pure titanium frames; more weight reduction! The
S4 fly rods have REC custom reel seats with extra-select California
buckeye burl wood inserts and cigar cork grips for 3 through 6 weights.
The 9’6” 6 weight, 7 and 8 weight fly rods have full-wells grips and
anodized aluminum reel seats. Scott has in the S4 Series fly rods
ranging from 8’ to 9’6” in length. As the guys at Scott say, the S4 is
“Pure Scott”, meaning fun to cast and fun to fish!
• Fast action fly rods

Leland on Unsanded Blanks
Would you paint a cane rod? Then why would you paint a graphite one?
Scott’s unpainted, unsanded blanks have become something of a signature look for the Colorado rodmaker, and the appearance is well-received by some anglers, but not all. Remember that electing ‘natural finish’ is not simply an aesthetic judgment on Scott's part. By eschewing a high-gloss sheen, Scott builds rods that cast less glare, which every experienced angler knows can put fish down. But a subtler, stealthier appearance isn’t the whole story. When Scott’s rodbuilders roll graphite to make blanks, they know that these blanks won’t be sanded when they’re made into rods. Sanding is an inexact process, even today, and in order to accommodate it, other rodmakers must roll thicker blanks in case one spot gets more sanded than another, creating a weak spot. In this way, by using unsanded blanks, Scott can build their rods to narrower tolerances. The result is a lighter blank with greater sensitivity and ample power.
Leland on Scott Fly Rods
Founded in 1973, by Harry Wilson, Scott quickly
became known for their fine fiberglass fly rods. However, very soon,
they began to experiment with graphite. Within a few years Scott
developed, their signature, tapered hollow internal ferrule. In the
late 1970's Scott's pioneering graphite rod, designed specifically for
salmon and steelhead, was introduced. Further, they initiated one of
the first true quality control rating systems for rod blanks. The
result was greater consistency in rods throughout the production
process.
Scott is a company whose history is filled with
firsts. They were the first rod maker to introduce a five-piece
fiberglass rod. They began to experiment with graphite as early as any
rod maker. Scott was the first rod company to successfully develop and
sell multi-piece graphite rods; and the list goes on and on. This
foresight has lead to a number of developments in production and design
that has made them one of today's industry leaders. The first Scott
series to feature four piece rods in 2-12 weight sizes is the S3 series
which soon lead to the S3S and now the S4 fly rods.
The S3
represented the best tip flex rod Scott has ever made. Given the
overwhelming success of the S3 the team at Scott added a saltwater
series to the line. Having gathered input from dealers and pros alike,
this series will no doubt find itself battling some of the world's
ultimate game fish. The S3S rods load as quickly as any rod out there.
They are deadly accurate which is good for the angler and bad for the
bonefish. This series features the patented Scott ARC reinforcement;
this addition helps the angler land those trophy fish you see in all
the magazines. All of these developments and design have lead to the
design of "new" best tip flex rod the S4 fly rod.
Scott on the S4 Fly Rod Series
"The new S4 series of fast action rods are exceptional in
every way. Combine power with feel, the lightest physical weights with
durability, sensitive tips with superb stability and accuracy, line
speed with tippet protection, the finest components with top
craftsmanship, and you start to get an idea what these rods are all
about.
S4 rods feature REC Recoil nickel titanium snake
guides, Fuji SiC Concept strippers in real titanium frames, and REC
custom reel seats with extra select California buckeye burl wood
spacers. Add to all of that, Scott touches like measuring wraps and
alignment dots, and you’ve found the Ultimate Fishing Tool.
Why Multi-Directional Layups?
We
use three different high performance carbon fibers in S4 rods and each
is laid up at a different angle. This means your S4 rods track true for
greater accuracy, and smoothly transfer power from your cast to the
line.
- Fast action, high line speed
- REC nickel titanium snake guides
- Fuji Concept titanium stripping guides
- Pure Scott
Scott on Scott
"At our company there's a reason for doing what we do.
We call it the Scott Difference. We see it every day at work, preach it
to anyone within earshot and feel it in our fly rods every time we fish.
This mantra, which we call the Scott Difference, is embedded
throughout our workshop and crammed underneath our fingernails at the
end of each day. We perform this act of faith and worship towards
detail because we know it eventually makes its way upstream to our
dealers, and ultimately to you.
And even though you'll hear us talk about the Scott Difference we
actually can't take all the credit. It's a way of doing things that
began with Harry Wilson when he started Scott back in 1974, and has
been evolving in the hands of anyone who has made, sold, or fished
Scott rods ever since. We see it as a 28 year old heritage-in-process
that doesn't sit around the workbench talking about how good the
fishing used to be.
And when it's all said and done, we are rod makers and our goal is simple: To handcraft the ultimate fishing tool.
If our customers and friends can't see and feel what they're paying
for then we don't charge for it. The Scott Difference is tangible, and
we can point to it in every rod. The long list starts with hand fit
internal ferrules, individual flex rating, custom graphite, and hand
turned Portuguese cork grips, then keeps on going.
Like we said, it's all about a way of doing things, and it's all about how good the fishing's going to be.
Now get out there."
