Leland on G. Loomis Fly Fishing Rods
When Gary Loomis set off to construct the perfect steelhead rod
in 1982, the outcome would be much greater than the perfection of one
simple rod model. Gary had worked for other fly fishing manufacturers,
and he firmly believed that graphite was the future of the industry.
What he wanted was a rod that was soft enough to dampen the shock of a
careening steelhead, but left enough backbone to bring the fish to the
net. Using specialized machinist equipment, Gary started GLoomis rod
company to make "everyday on the water more memorable", and the rest is
rod making history.
GLoomis has been on the cutting edge of rod construction materials
for years. Starting with second-generation graphite, IM6, then moving
to IMX, and most recently, TLX (Type III) graphite, GLoomis has a
history of immediately incorporating the newest materials from the
aerospace industry into their rods. As makers not only of fly rods, but
also of general tackle rods, the designers at GLoomis rely on
field-testing and input from experts in every niche in the fishing
industry. These guys know fishing, and they know how to manipulate
their materials to create performance on the water. Their specially
designed machines build blanks using greater pressure, resulting in a
denser graphite blend that is up to five times stronger than the
industry standard. All this translates into rods that are as durable as
they are fishable, made with innovation, and design going hand in hand.
Talking to Gary Loomis about his rod-building philosophy is
pleasurable and simple. His catch-word, "efficiency", is the driving
concept behind each rod GLoomis manufactures. Finding a way to create
the best fishing tool for every type of fishing involves dedication and
know-how, and these qualities are felt in each cast of a Loomis rod.
G. Loomis on G. Loomis CrossCurrent GLX Fly Rods
In our 20 year history we have rarely been known to
drop names. However, after hearing about the group of fisherman that
was involved in the design of the CrossCurrent rods, we thought we owed
it to our clients to take a good look at these rods. Surprise,
surprise, surprise! We found a quick, responsive set of rods that are
destine to make a quick and long-lasting name for themselves in the
saltwater arena. These rods are quick to load, have the mid-level
strength to carry a ton of line and the backbone to put the mustard to
any saltwater species you go after.
"Its the age-old formula... find the moving water
and find the fish. Tides and currents - they're the keys to saltwater
fly fishing. Where current meets still water or dissimilar currents
converge, edges are created and the bait is trapped. It s these edges
that fly fishers seek... the "crosscurrents" where fish and fly meet!
Saltwater fly fishing is a passion - it's advantage fish, not
angler. A fanatical pursuit with zeal fueled by the degree of
difficulty required to reach the ultimate goal. It's fast fish and
skinny water for some... big fish and blue water for others. Sometimes
it's finesse and long leaders, but most of the time it's brute strength
and power! Creating fly rods for such a demanding fishery requires a
lot of dreaming and a lot of fishing. The final result is the most
advanced and uniquely different series of fly rods ever. Messrs.
Pallot, Wejebe, Rajeff and Loomis and a cast of hundreds shared their
angling and casting expertise to help us create our new "CrossCurrent"
saltwater fly rods."

“After more than 25 years in this business we’ve
learned a few things about making great fly rods. Never content to rest
on our laurels, what you’ll find on these pages are the finest rods we
have ever made. Proudly, every one of them is designed, rolled,
assembled and hand finished in Woodland, Washington by some of the best
craftsmen in the world.

Gary Loomis Recognized by President
August 23, 2003
President Bush recognized Gary Loomis in a speech he gave at Ice Harbor Dam in Burbank, Washington.
"Gary and the President
In President Bush's most recent visit to the Northwest, Gary Loomis
was invited to Ice Harbor Dam by the President to hear him deliver a
speech on salmon recovery, an issue Gary Loomis has aggressively taken
on throughout the years. Bush recognized Gary in his speech for his
continuing dedication to improving fish habitat through Fish First.
"Gary is a guy who cares about restoring salmon runs and salmon
habitat. So he and a group of volunteers have come together to work on
the salmon projects around the state of Washington. They're installing
culverts to accommodate the fish. They're creating side channels and
ponds..."
"It's just overwhelming for a little Woodland boy to meet the
president," Gary said. "It was the highlight of my life." Gary
explained that Bush immediately recognized him as the "G" in G. Loomis
on the fly rod he uses.
