When the founders of Hatch Reels approached us with this amazing Set of Eight Boen Engraved Hatch Fly Reels, “stunning” was their description. We can’t agree more; objects of lasting beauty, unique in the fact that they are FULLY MACHINED RELIEF ENGRAVED, a first. Yet, within each beats the heart of a pure machine, perfectly designed to fight a fish on the fly across a spectrum of waters, from mountain trout rills to the blue realm of the billfish. Take a closer look by clicking on the photo above and you’ll see the dramatic difference created by artist Lance Boen and the precision of the Hatch artisans. Only 30 of the Eight Limited Edition Reels will ever be made. The first five of each will only be sold as complete sets. Leland is offering something very special; our Set of Eight proudly bears
Serial #1. We can only sell them once. These magnificent reels deserve their baptism in the hands of a knowing angler.
A gift of a lifetime for that special fisherman that truly “has everything”.
One look at the Northwestern Native American inspired engraving from the hands of award winning artist Lance Marshal Boen on these reels will leave you awestruck in terms of their detail, beauty, and depth of relief. NOT your standard laser engraving! No one, to our knowledge, has ever done full relief machined engraving on fly reels, until now. These collectable reels will probably find their way into a modern art museum someday, but until then, they're capable of fighting and landing the most powerful fish that swim. Included in the eight are 1) Hatch 3 Plus Reel, 1) 5 Plus, 2) 7 Plus Reels, 3) 9 Plus Reels and 1) 12 Plus Reel for ocean giants, each with their individual artistic design. Each Reel is marked with Serial #1 and comes in its own uniquely beautiful wooden display case and custom leather protective case, and of course, a lifetime warranty. Fish on!

Leland on Hatch Reels
Short on history, but long in tradition and deep with passion! Hatch Fly Reels were born out a dream of making a fly fishing reel that has it all; lightweight, high quality machining and a drag system with tolerances previously thought unreachable. Through
their mutual friend of Scotty Cameron, of golf fame, John Torok met and teamed with machine shop owner Andy Ashcraft to develop his dream into reality. The result is a series of reels machined to the highest quality, so much so you’ll wonder if you should be hanging them on the wall as art instead of fishing with them. But make no mistake, these reels are tough and are made for one thing, fly fishing! The Hatch Plus is a reel whose porting is stylish and cutting edge and extremely strong. When you lock one onto your fly rod, you may think the whole thing is going to take off for the moon, but don’t worry, you’ll be plying the water with grace and style. The sealed Rulon/stainless steel disc drag is second to none and allows the angler power to stop tarpon and the lightness to protect 7X tippet. All this makes the Hatch Fly Reels one for the books.
Hatch on their Limited Edition Boen Engraved Fly Reels
Over the past year we've been working with artist Lance Marshall Boen on producing limited Edition Engraved Fly Reels. Now when I say engraved, I'm not talking about laser engraving. I'm talking about fully machined relief engraving into the surface of the reel. To our knowledge this has not been done before.
Back in February of 2008 we were attending the Pleasanton Fly Fishing Show. While we were walking around we ran into an artist from Carmel Valley, California named Lance
Marshall Boen. While our medium of choice is metal, Lance's is leather. Lance makes the most incredible handmade fish on the planet. His artwork is collected globally and has won several awards. One look at his artwork and we could see unlimited possibilities in metal. For those of you who know his work you know just what I'm talking about.
After talking with Lance, we decided on creating a collection of reels instead of just one or two. In fact, there's 6 different designs on 8 different reels. Each reel is number sequentially 01/30 - 30/30 and has Lance's signature engraved on top. The paint fill and spindle are a deep root beer color with gold metal flake. The first five numbers in the sequence 01/30 to 05/30 will be sold as complete sets only. All the others are available for individual purchase. The reels come in a sheep skin lined embossed leather pouch inside of a wood wine box.
Hatch on the Hatch Drag System
STACKED DISC DRAG
The majority of the drags in reels on the market today incorporate what we call one to one surface contact. Meaning that one surface (metal) is driven or drawn toward
another surface (cork, plastic, carbon fiber, graphite, etc). Hatch reels take a completely different approach by incorporating a stacked disc drag. The discs are made up of a combination of stainless steel and Rulon®, and positioned in a stacked configuration.
The red discs are the Rulon®, the silver are stainless steel. Notice that you have braking surface on both sides of the stainless steel discs. 6 surfaces on the 3 Plus, 8 surfaces on the 5 & 7 Plus and 10 surfaces on the 9 Plus. Since braking pressure is happening to both sides simultaneously, the material wears evenly. EBS is measured by the surface contact area of one disc times the number of surfaces it contacts.
EBS (Effective Braking Surface)
Each size reel has its own unique disc size and combination. The size and number of discs determines the EBS in square inches. Now this explanation is way oversimplified, but it’s a start. If you’re interested in knowing more please call us at Hatch.
What is the Benefit?
1. More surface area makes for a smoother, more durable drag and virtually eliminates start up inertia.
2. Heat distribution occurs over multiple surfaces, rather than one to one surface contact, thereby eliminating stick slip problems caused by extreme heat in high-speed runs.
3. Disc materials require NO lubrication or maintenance.
Hatch on Hatch Reels
"At Hatch we only know how to do things one way – with passion. We love what we do, and we love fly-fishing even more. That passion is machined into every reel we make. The determination to
strive for perfection has been a key part in Hatch's philosophy since we first put pen to napkin.
We have a healthy respect for tradition and those that came before us, while constantly looking towards the future by pushing the boundaries of design and performance. But beyond the technical aspect of any product lies the foundation of what the product was initially designed for. You might guess that it was to create a reel that would help anglers catch more fish, but ultimately the reels were designed with one thing in mind – fun.
A Hatch is more than a fly-fishing reel. It's an experience. From its unique features to the precision machining, a Hatch reel oozes quality. Hatch reels were made to last a lifetime, and then some. It's our commitment to our customers that we will keep inspiring you with innovative new products now and in the future. We hope you enjoy fishing with our reels as much as we enjoyed making them.
