Fly Tying Tinsel, Wire, & Vinyl D Rib

Wapsi UTC Tinsel         Wapsi UTC  Ultra Wire       Wapsi UTC Vinyl D Rib

As the sun presents its rays just above the ridgeline in the distance, Montana’s Gallatin begins to split and peel, giving off its unmistakable sparkle. You’ve only seen a couple of midges rise from their watery nests to fly off into the big sky. It’s still winter and you know the fish are down there, you’ve got to give them something they want to eat. For the next few weeks the name of the game is: nymph, nymph, nymph… So you tie on a leech pattern with the measured movements of a practiced blues guitarist in a smoky club. You wade a bit further down river and begin your morning. Line zips past your ear as you make your first casts. You’ve warmed up and your dead drift is on today. It’s only a mater of time – Fish on!

Tinsel and wire is used in nymph patterns to create ribbing effects and reflectivity on the body sections of flies. Wire will also add small amounts of weight to a fly.

Wapsi UTC Tinsel
Fly tying tinsel is a classic material that can be used in a wide range of applications. This great spooled material is often found in traditional Atlantic salmon and steelhead fly recipes and in fly patterns that call for delicate and slightly flashy wing cases. Fly tying tinsel is available in several finishes that will add different flashy and attractive qualities to just about any artificial fly.

Wapsi UTC Ultra Wire
When Colorado-based fly angler and tyer John Barr constructed his first Copper John, he needed a versatile nymph with a high sink rate. Today, the Copper John is one of the most popular nymphs in just about any situation and in the 20 or so years since its conception has earned its place in the trout fly boxes of just about every fly angler in the American West. The Copper John requires copper wire, but don’t fall into the “any old wire will do” trap – you and your flies will never escape from it. Be sure to use Wapsi’s UTC Ultra Wire in your Copper John patterns and in any other wire body fly you tie on a regular basis. This non-tarnishing copper wire will outlast its competition and will remain effective and attractive cast after cast. Be sure to use the brassie size for your Brassie patterns, and experiment with the wide range of colors offered by Wapsi.

Wapsi UTC Vinyl D Rib
When California’s Bob Nauheim constructed the first Crazy Charlie, he was thinking about catching more bonefish. As his ingenious little fly pattern developed and gained momentum with flats fly fishers not just in Andros, but across the tropics, Bob’s original monofilament thread was rapidly replaced with Vinyl D Rib, an innovative modern synthetic. Now Wapsi’s Vinyl D Rib is a must in a range of saltwater fly patterns that require reinforcement. This great material is also perfect for creating elegant and realistic segmented bodies on nymphs, stoneflies, and midge patterns. In fact, one of the easiest flies to create, can be thrown together with a few wraps of Vinyl D Rib, a bead head, and some peacock herl – you’re ready to cast to your favorite trout!
