Paul Miller Super Spey Feathers from Siskiyou Aviary

When our first shipment of Paul Miller Super Spey Rhea Feathers from Siskiyou Aviary arrived in our San Francisco shop
, you’d have thought it was Christmas morning or someone’s birthday! These premium rhea feathers have caused quite a stir, and when we opened the box they arrived in, we instantly understood the hype. These rhea feathers are hand selected and dyed by Kate Davidson, owner of Ashland, Oregon’s Siskiyou Aviary.

Kate is licensed to do business in the state of Oregon and carries USA Fish and Wildlife approval as well as an Import/Export license to obtain and sell these rare feathers, and she does it humanely, gathering them when the birds molt naturally. Kate has built her business by cultivating an incredibly strong network of breeders throughout the world. Through this network she is able to obtain naturally molted feathers from the healthiest and most beautiful birds on the planet. On her property in Ashland, Oregon, Kate keeps exotic chickens, ducks, geese, pigeons, turkeys, and some pheasants.

Ms. Davidson and professional fly tyer and accomplished steelhead fly fisherman, Paul Miller, initially put their heads together to create and market these fantastic feathers because of their long fibers – they’re simply perfect for tying Spey and Atlantic salmon fly patterns. These feathers also respond to dyes quite well, allowing Kate to play with some of the most beautiful colors in the fly tying world.

Paul Miller Super Spey feathers can be used in an astonishingly wide variety of fly patterns, but they absolutely shine in both modern and traditional Spey patterns as well as classic Atlantic salmon flies. These feathers can be stacked at the bend of a hook to create long, sinuous tails or Palmered around a hook shank to create amazing prawn and squid patterns with loads of articulation and movement. The length of these supple fibers can also make any traditional or modern Spey fly design come alive in the water. They can also be soaked in water and stripped by hand for use in large, elegant blue water flies or in much more standard saltwater flies.

Fish these feathers on flies for big brown trout, steelhead, salmon, rainbow trout, and sea run browns or for barracuda, striped bass, tarpon, snook, redfish, and even permit. These beautiful feathers are premium quality and should be put to use in your standard fly patterns as well as your more creative modern fly recipes; you’ll love the results.

Siskiyou Aviary

Siskiyou Aviary was established 14 years ago and is located in beautiful Ashland, Oregon. There, on her bucolic farm among the “hay, garlic, cows, pigs, and lots of birds,” Kate Davidson runs an extremely successful business that specializes in the trade of exotic feathers for artisan communities across the world. Kate’s feathers have been featured in the beautiful and highly sought after masks of Hawai’i’s Daniel Artt, in Hollywood costume creations, and they’ve even accented the expensive diamonds displayed at Tiffany’s in New York City’s chic 5th Avenue window display.

Kate’s feathers most recently have become the centerpiece of many of the world’s most beautiful Spey and salmon flies. Kate’s operation is an environmentally conscious one and birds aren’t harmed in the feather gathering process – she works with a large network of breeders across the world who help her gather feathers after they have been molted naturally. Ms. Davidson is licensed by the US Department of Fish and Wildlife to trade and sell feathers from exotic birds, and on her farm, she keeps a wide variety of more common domestic birds.

Feathers from Siskiyou Aviary have become wildly popular among the world’s most discriminating fly tyers and these natural treasures are quite deserving of the hype. Recently, Ms. Davidson has strengthened Siskiyou Aviary and its product line by teaming with professional artisan fly tyer, writer, and accomplished steelhead fly fisherman, Paul Miller, to create and market the Paul Miller Super Spey line of premium quality rhea feathers. These feathers are of truly outstanding quality and boast the long, sinuous fibers necessary for creating the most elegant and effective Spey and saltwater fly patterns on earth.
