The water at your feet rushes by in a fall flourish, racing and winding its way to the cool depths of Lake Ontario. You know those giant lake run browns are riding the current to feed on the wealth of the open water, and that's why you've made the journey to this spot. As you feel the solid grab of your quarry take your fly, you understand it: the time you spent at your fly tying desk, selecting the right hooks and material was worth it after all...

Don’t forget to think about the hooks you work with. After all, when you hear line buzzing off the reel and you feel the life whipping at the end of your leader, the hook is the true connection to the fish. Hooks are available in many sizes ranging from large #2, #4, and #6 hooks commonly used for saltwater, salmon, and steelhead patterns to very tiny #16, #18, and #20 hooks for more delicate trout situations and other sizes for everything in between. Hooks also come in a variety of shapes. Some are shaved or filed to increase the actual performance of the hook, while other shaped hooks are designed with slightly curved shanks to give a tyer the “backbone” for a more realistic nymph or scud body.

Again, as with all fly tying materials, know and consider the fly you’ll be tying before you select your hook. If you aren’t sure which hook to choose, give the staff at Leland a call and explain your situation and your questions (we'll be glad to help you out!) or consult any of the many volumes written on the subject – a little bit of research will take you and the flies you tie a long way!
