The stream is abuzz with sensation of coming movement and lively action, but nothing’s happening yet. It’s late summer and you’ve made the annual pilgrimage to Montana in hopes of seeing it again. The timing is just about right. There it is! Just across the river bank! The first hopper of the day has been devoured by a hulking brown. It’s on…

Modern advances in plastics and foam technology have spurred further development and innovation in a wide range of industries, and the world of fly tying has also reaped great benefits from these advances in materials technology. Fly tyers have accepted plastics, foams, and other synthetic materials with open arms and have put these new materials to good use, developing a new catalog of creative, attractive, and effective fly patterns.

Closed cell foams and plastics are now utilized in just about every category of fly tying material, but shine when included in the construction of body kits, fly tying foams, and other innovative skin products.

Body Kits
Saltwater popping bugs offer a two-pronged attack for the fly angler in hot pursuit of big saltwater game fish. These simple bugs generate low-frequency sound waves that can travel through water long distances and will alert a distant and hungry fish of surface commotion. These popping bugs are often and most easily created from a pre-packaged and painted kit.

Fly Tying Foam
Fly tying foam is traditionally found as body material in larger stone fly and terrestrial patterns, but can be used in a range of smaller artificial fly recipes as well such as standard hatching midges. Use this closed cell fly tying foam to add lifelike color and great flotation properties to your dry fly creations.

Skin Material (Bodi stretch)
Scuds and shell-backs can be some of the most productive flies in the water
. Big brown trout and even rainbows will tightly key in on these nourishing bugs when the conditions are right. A host of synthetic fly tying materials has cropped up to make creating realistic scud bodies a breeze, and innovative materials like Spirit River’s Bodi-Stretch make it possible.
