STEP FOUR: leland fly fishing schools private on-stream instruction
Learn the art of fishing from the top guides in California
Forming a Loop --> Line Control --> Casting in the wind --> Private Onstream Instruction --> Mastering the Art of Fly Fishing
Now is the time to apply your acquired casting skills and enjoy the rewards of your practice. The Blue Ribbon Trout Streams of California are the setting for your next step in becoming a self–reliant fly fisher.
This is really what it’s all about: cool water, sunlight dappled, flowing past you, the
sound of birds and insects filtering through the forest canopy, and the steady, dimpling rise of a trout beneath the shaded bank in front of you. Now is the time. But there are some decisions to be made: What type of bug is that trout gorging on and what fly might fool him? Is my leader long and fine enough for a good presentation? And where do I place my initial cast to compensate for the different currents between myself and the fish? I may have only one shot, so I don’t want to spook him.
With a true expert at your side, to advise and encourage you, these mysteries begin to unravel. Leland recommended guides are not your average guides. They are selected not only for their superior fishing skills and local stream knowledge, but more importantly, for their ability to impart these skills to you in a friendly and supportive manner.
You’ll learn the intricacies of mending line, how to identify the
different insects and other foods living in and along the streambed, and when to fish with a dry fly, nymph or streamer. Your instructor will help you with your knots and show you the best way to rig for different situations, as well as the most effective techniques for fighting, landing and releasing fish. You’ll leave with more than just a memory of a great day. You’ll walk away with the skills to independently go back and recreate that day for yourself.
Leland recommended guide-instructors offer their services in three general regions that are known for the best trout fishing in California; the central Sierra, the Tahoe/Truckee area and the Burney/Shasta area.
