FLY TYING - Beginner to expert
Catch your next fish on a fly YOU tied!
Over the years,
we've had the privilege of introducing many people to fly fishing through our Leland Fly Fishing Schools. More than a few, now a little deeper under the spell of fast water and wild fish, want to learn to tie their own flies.
Learning fly tying
can open up a whole new realm of knowledge in understanding specific aspects of casting aerodynamics, fish feeding behavior, as well as the life cycles and behaviors of the insects and other foods that fish prey upon. Fly Tying is not only an engrossing hobby for those that enjoy crafting with their own hands, it’s an art form in it’s own right, with a rich tradition of techniques, tools, and materials that have been handed down over the course of five centuries. It’s a greater reward and accomplishment to land a beautiful fish on a fly you tied yourself!
Or, let’s say you’ve had some previous experience with fly tying
and are planning a trip to catch
bonefish
at
Christmas Island.
We’ll show the most productive fly patterns that have worked for us there and why they tend to be more effective than others. In this case, for example, we’ll select the Crazy Charlie, Gotcha, and Bonefish Puff patterns that closely match the small crustaceans most often eaten by Christmas Island bones. We’ll show you how to choose the correct materials for these patterns and the most efficient manner for tying them on the hook, plus tips and variations for other bonefish locales. In addition, we’ll discuss the best methods for you to present these flies for greater success on the saltwater flats. You’ll walk out of this class armed with the ability to crank out a bunch of your own bonefish flies for this trip, and many trips to come!
Want to get started tying your own flies?
We supply all of the materials,
as well as all the tools required that you’ll use during class time. And you get to keep all the flies you tie. It’s as easy as making a phone call to our San Francisco store. Come join us in learning this fascinating element of fly fishing, and start catching fish on flies you tie yourself!
