Leland on the Abel Super 11 Large Arbor Fly Reel

Tarpon, Sailfish, and False Albacore are just part
of the Abel Super 11 Fly Fishing Reel's forte. A screaming giant Albie can't match the backing capacity of this large arbor reel! I like it's very narrow profile for quick line pick up. It’s the perfect size for Tarpon under 100 pounds, with a super smooth cork disk drag to give you the edge when it counts. The Abel Super 11 reel balances nicely with 10 or 11 weight fly rods. Save money when you purchase the matching, larger capacity Super 11 Standard Arbor Spool as part of the FlexABELity Kit. Then, you'll be able to fish 12 and 13 weight lines, too, all on the same reel frame! From the Outer Banks south to mangrove-fringed cays, you’ll need some extra fuel, your sunscreen and your Abel Super 11.

Leland on Specifications

If you need a lightweight, high capacity fly reel for saltwater rockets, you won’t find a more dependable machine than the Abel Super 11.

Leland on Abel Super Series Reels

Abel didn’t invent the large arbor fly reel, but their Super Series certainly has achieved the embodiment of that concept; a perfect balance between hub diameter and spool capacity. No wonder these reels have taken the fly fishing world by storm! Why large arbor? Faster line pick up, less line coil, and better drag continuity than standard arbor reels. The Abel Super Series fly fishing reels feature a super sized cork drag disk that insures incredible smoothness with ultra low start up inertia and the stopping power to beat fish quickly. Both frame and spool are incredibly strong and rigid, yet lightweight due to their beautifully machined oblong porting.

Abel’s proprietary hard anodizing finish bestows a lifetime of corrosion protection. A new outgoing clicker lets you know how fast line is coming off your spool. Three sealed waterproof stainless steel ball bearings offer near frictionless rotation. Super Series Reels size 6 and larger now come with a double pawl system for added reliability. And remember, with FlexABELity, you can use the same reel frame on several different weight fly rods. All Abel reels are convertible from right to left hand wind. Standard color is lustrous Black Coral. Limited lifetime warranty, should you ever need it, right down to the laminated, machined, and sealed wooden handle.

The Super Series has a model for every line weight from 2 to 14, from farm pond to the deep blue ocean. Find out why experts prefer the reels that set more World Records than any other for 2006; Abel, the fly reel you’ll hand down to your grandchildren.

Leland on Abel Products

Established in 1987, the Abel name is synonymous with quality fly fishing products. Their fly fishing reels have set the industry standard for excellence. Steve Abel, the Abel behind the company name, was schooled as a machinist in the aerospace industry. Frustrated with the fly reels available to the demanding saltwater angler, he set out to create the "perfect fly reel;" and as Steve will gladly admit, he became obsessed with this pursuit. The time and effort Abel craftsmen have spent developing their superb reels becomes clear the first time you fish with one.

Skillfully machined from solid blocks of high molecular density cold finished 6061-T6 aluminum and 303 stainless steel, Abel reels maintain an ideal balance of durability, weight and performance. Every possible facet of Abel reels are beautifully ported, or ventilated, by CNC (Computer Numerical Control) lathes and mills without compromising structural integrity. In fact, every machinable part, right down to the stainless screws, is produced in Abel’s Camarillo, California facility to insure the utmost in quality control. All parts are hand polished before assembly. The result is a light, yet extremely robust reel that can survive a lifetime of fishing. Though their outward appearance exudes precision, with an Abel reel, it's what is inside that really counts.

At the center of every Abel Big Game and Super Series Reel is a large cork composite disk actuated by a draw bar through the center of the reel. This cork drag system is elegantly simple, with very few parts, yet, is highly effective. As the drag knob is tightened, the back of the spool is drawn against the cork drag disk. This large drag surface can create a substantial amount of friction and thus can effectively slow a powerful fish. The resultant heat is the reason that many reel drag systems fail. However, the Abel open draw bar utilizes the entire spool and frame to dissipate this heat quicker than any other drag design.

Cork is the only durable drag material that is compressible, offering a very low start-up inertia and silky-smooth transition with a wide range of adjustability The results speak for themselves; fly reels that have been the most successful in landing fish over 100 pounds, and, therefore, operate more smoothly and survive the greatest amounts of stress, have draw bar drags. That’s why, according to the International Game Fish Association, Abel Fly Fishing Reels landed more World Records in 2006 than any other brand.

The Leland Team has fished Abel reels all over the world, from New Zealand to Nantucket, and they have consistently landed fish without problem, time and time again. Whether pursuing ocean giants or fishing your favorite trout stream, you can count on your Abel Reel.

Abel on their Super Series Reels

This is the 11th year we have machined Large Arbor reels, making Abel a pioneer in the field. For 2007, all Super Series reels size 6 and larger and all Big Game reels size 3N and larger will be fitted with our new Double Pawl system. Two pawls instead of one are a bit more reliable when big fish are headed for the horizon; but the best thing is the really neat sound they make. Instead of click click click, double pawl reels hum a merry tune of clickclickclickclick. Wheeee!

Super Series Large Arbor Spools are 100% interchangeable with spools of comparably-sized Standard Arbor Abel Reels. We call that FlexABELity. You'll call it a miracle. Essentially, it gives you two totally different reels with different line capacities at the price of 1-1/2.

Example: Consider a Super 8 Large Arbor Reel and a Standard Arbor spare spool. The Super 8 LA holds an 8-weight line with 200 yards of 20# backing, the perfect weapon for bonefish, school stripers and reds; while the interchangeable Super 8 Standard spool will hold a 12-weight line plus 250 yards of 30# backing, or 500 yards of 50# Spectra, for tarpon and sailfish.

Nothing else can compare. No other reels have the ability to interchange spools and frames and no other has the Abel drag system that gives you the ability to Stop-a-Sub.

All Super Series reels are ported (ventilated) using a "rounded oblong" design that maintains total strength and rigidity in the metal. They're light, yet retain all of Abel's traditional strength and integrity.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT
To design and build the best, most dependable gear in the world and give world class customer service.

WE’RE NUMBER ONE!
According to the International Game Fish Association (IGFA), Abel Reels were used to set 56 Fly Fishing World Records during 2006. Abel’s World Record catches were for both fresh and saltwater fish in a variety of species and tippet classes.

With Abel's unique FlexABELity of spools and frames, it substantially increases your options. FlexABELity means that spools from the Standard Arbor Super Series fit into the same frames as the Large Arbor Super Series; a feature that essentially gives you two separate reels for the price of less than one-and-one-half.

Abel drag systems are made from cork. Despite everything we know about drag systems for fly reels, some manufacturers still use cheap plastic. Plastic can’t be compressed, so the drag plate flexes. On an Abel reel, the cork compresses and serves as a brake. We use a superior high grade cork with a little neat’s-foot oil on it. Our cork drags do not wear; we have 1987 vintage reels at lodges and camps in Alaska, Lees Ferry, Mexico and Belize to prove it. Check out the ability of cork to compress by opening your favorite champagne bottle. Aha! It works.

Abel reel frames and spools are machined from cold finished 6061-T6 aircraft quality aluminum. Cold finished aluminum is significantly more expensive than extruded aluminum; but the cold finishing process dramatically increases the molecular density. It creates a stronger metal. Reels are then precision machined (not die cast) on C.N.C. lathes and mills. They are then both machined and hand de-burred, hand polished, cleaned and inspected. The end result is a lightweight reel that’s tough as a Marine drill sergeant and destined to be fished by you, your children, grandchildren and theirs!
