Leland on the Beulah Platinum 12'6" 6wt. 4 Piece
The Platinum 6 weight is the perfect
summer steelhead rod for small to medium-sized steelhead rivers from
California's Trinity to the Kalama in Washington and everywhere in
between. Midwestern steelheaders have found that this rod gets it
done on Great Lakes steelhead and lake-run browns as well. The 6 wt
Platinum shines with dry and greased-line presentations, but load it
deep into the butt section and it will huck nine feet of T-14,
earning it a spot on some of your winter trips as well. As with any
great spey rod, its use is by no means confined to steelhead, either;
take it with you on your Alaskan silver salmon and Patagonian sea-run
brown trips and you'll be amazed by the amount of water you can
cover, not to mention the casting effort you'll save. And if you do
luck into a hot winter fish, rest assured that your rod is up to the
task. The 6 wt platinum, like all Beulah rods, is built not only to
cast beautifully but to take abuse. And when you fish every day after
work, like the Beulah team does, you put your rods through a heck of
a lot of testing abuse.
Leland on Specifications
The
6 wt Platinum is fast becoming the sweetheart of serious steelhead
bums throughout the west. A 28% lower resin count allows it to come
in at 6.5 ounces, making it the perfect light summer steelhead stick.
However, the moderate modulus butt section and boron stringers are
there for you when it's time to apply serious side pressure. The 6 wt
launches Skagit heads from 410-440 grains, even with modest sink
tips, and with a Scandi you'll find yourself throwing more controlled
loops, with a more relaxed stroke, than ever before. While it's hard
not to think of long summer days and glassy tail outs when you pick
up the 6 wt Platinum, its versatility allows it to reliably cross
over when the rain starts falling and the rivers rise. The custom
cork burl highlights, graceful thread work and custom anodized
aluminum reel seat won't necessarily catch you more fish, but owning
a rod this beautiful might just be one more reason to go fishing.

Leland on Platinum Spey Rods
These days, everybody makes a spey rod. Quite honestly, with all
the buzz going around, it would be foolish not to. For Beulah, making
premium spey rods isn't merely a niche-filling strategy. It's their
heart and soul. It's what put them on the map with their original
Classic Switch Rod Series. It was and always will be a priority. In
fact, call Beulah's office, and there's a good chance that the person
who answers will be wading chest-deep in a steelhead river, spey rod in
hand. With their newest offering, the Platinum Series, Beulah has
taken their spey rods to the next technological level, while retaining
the fishability and soul for which they're famous.
The Platinum Series is the realization of an intense passion for steelhead, enabled by highly advanced manufacturing. This series offers a more traditional flex pattern that loads deeper into the butt section than the Classic Series, with a rapid, crisp tip recovery
that tells you unequivocally that you're hitting the “sweet spot”. With
28% lower resin counts, the blank weight has been minimized to
significantly reduce casting fatigue, especially on deep wades and long
summer evenings. High-pressure blank rolling insures an unprecedented level of consistency that maximizes the Platinum Series' efficiency and strength.
While the series' performance is a major reason to fish a Platinum, there's more to these rods than how they cast. Obsessive attention to detail and aesthetics, from the rich, tasteful thread wraps, to custom burled cork detailing, reveals Beulah's overarching goal: to make custom-quality fly rods
on a production scale. They are one of very few companies that surpass
this goal with flying colors. Finally, these rods are made to catch
fish. They are mercilessly tested by the Beulah staff and a hard-core
group of west coast guides. With a strategic blend of moderate and high modulus graphite,
reinforced with boron stringers, the Platinum Series of spey rods can
be counted on when landing the fish of your life requires applying more
rod pressure than you ever have before.
The Beulah team doesn't merely want to sell you a fly rod. They want you to enjoy fishing as much as they do. That's why they make their own fly lines
to match with each of their Platinum spey offerings, whether you prefer
Skagit or Scandinavian-style casting. Rather than leaving it to chance,
they want to be sure that you have the opportunity to dial your spey
rod with the perfect line, right from the get-go. It's more evidence of
this company's respect for their products, the casting, the fish, and
for you.
Leland on Beulah
Beulah is a small company of dedicated fly anglers based in the gorgeous Rogue Valley of southern Oregon. Begun in 2005, Beulah is one of the little-known gems in the fly fishing industry. Beulah has wisely pursued a slow-growth trajectory, with sales directed through an exclusive network of specialty dealers, Leland among them. Beulah’s focus is building a concise collection of fly rods that can compete with the best out there, are matchless aesthetically, and are available at a fair price.
Beulah’s rod collection reflects what the people behind Beulah know best. Given that they come from the heart of Oregon’s steelhead country, it’s hardly a surprise that Beulahs are some of our favorite steelhead rods. But the company’s owners, James and Margaret Shaughnessy, have spent an enormous amount of time plying the fertile waters of Baja, and their lines of Surf and Bluewater rods reflect this extensive experience. Beulah was the first company to spearhead switch rods as a functional category between spey and single-handers, and today their Switch Rods are some of the most dynamic rods on the market.
Leland is thrilled to carry the full line-up of Beulah Fly Rods, and we’re confident our discerning client base will be duly impressed by them.
Beulah on the Platinum 12'6" 6wt. 4 Piece
If Beulah two handed rods were a baseball team, our NEW Platinum 12’6” 6
weight would be the MVP. Thanks to our carbon scrim the blank weighs
only 2.85 ounces and the completed rod weighs only 6.5 ounces. What
kind of 6 weight is it? Spot on! This rod features a more traditional
full-flex “Spey” action that loads deep into the butt section with
extremely fast tip recovery making it a joy to cast in all conditions.
Don’t call us because the answer is YES! It will handle big water and
big brute Steelhead while not overpowering the smallish 3-4 pound fish
making them special too. All line types and styles including
Scandinavian, Skagit, Mid or Long Belly will agree and excel when
matched to our Platinum 12’6” 6 weight.
Beulah on Beulah Fly Rods
Creating a new fly rod company is a decision that has been called a
lot of things, but easy is not one of them. With the help of guides,
fishermen, custom rod builders and a little luck, Beulah has managed to
find a home in a very competitive industry. In 2005 we set out to create
high performance products at a fair price. Judging by the response, we
have done just that and more.
From the beginning we have produced rods that we were excited to fish
even if it was outside the mainstream. In an effort to cover any fishing
situation, we started with a full range of fly rods including single
hand, salt, spey and a complete line of original switch rods. These are
now considered our Classic series, a proven line of rods that are
engineered to satisfy the most avid angler both in performance and
appearance. When our switch rods hit the market there was little to
nothing available in fly lines to make them fish well in all situations
so we took it upon ourselves to do that for you. Now you can enjoy lines
specifically matched to our rods and the growing market of switch and
spey rods. No more need to experiment and cut lines to match rods. Just
choose a Beulah switch or spey rod and we have the perfect fly lines to
go with it.
As graphite technology took the leap to all carbon scrim, Beulah Fly
Rods was right in the mix with a new line of premium rods, the Platinum
Series. What started as three uniquely designed spey rods has blossomed
into a full series of single hand, switch and spey rods. If the response
to our initial spey rods is any indication, we have another winner on
our hands.
Our marketing plan has always been based around true grass roots efforts
and creating personal relationships with customers, fly shops and
people who share our love of the sport. Thank you for letting us be a
part of your fly fishing experience. Because of you, we get to do what
we love to do. We’ll never lose sight of that fact. Here’s to the next
five years…
